In anticipation of Chinese New Year 2026, which according to the Eastern calendar will begin on February 17 and unfold under the sign of the Horse, the Spanish porcelain house Lladró turns to one of the most expressive and multifaceted symbols of the zodiac cycle. The new series brings together five porcelain creations, each offering a distinct interpretation of the Horse’s character — from power and dynamism to refined abstraction and decorative expression.
For centuries, the horse has remained a universal symbol of freedom, inner energy, and nobility. In Chinese culture, it represents independence, vitality, and an unstoppable drive forward, while in Spanish tradition it is inseparably linked to equestrian art, rural heritage, and ceremonial culture. Nowhere is this connection more deeply rooted than in Andalusia, where the horse occupies a central place in the region’s cultural and artistic identity. It is precisely at the crossroads of these traditions that Lladró’s Year of the Horse series is born.
A contemporary interpretation of the zodiac symbol is revealed in The Horse from the New Concept line. A stylized depiction of a horse’s head, executed in a rich red-and-gold palette, conveys inner movement and expressive intensity. The purity of form, the depth of red, and accents of golden luster create a sense of energy in motion, while decorative elements inspired by Eastern ornamentation emphasize the zodiac symbolism of the piece.
A softer, more tender mood is introduced with Baby Horse. Part of the Baby Animals collection, this sculpture presents the twelve Chinese zodiac signs in a light, almost fairytale-like manner. Crafted in pristine white porcelain, the piece combines matte and glossy finishes, expressive black eyes, and a hand-decorated chest ornament that lends emotional warmth to the sculpture. The image reflects traits traditionally attributed to those born under the sign of the Horse — energy, independence, and natural charisma.
An abstract artistic language unfolds in Origami Horse. Inspired by the Japanese art of origami, this sculpture in black matte porcelain captures the animal in motion: a raised leg and carefully balanced silhouette evoke a sense of dynamism and poise. Faceted surfaces enhance the interplay of light and shadow, emphasizing the elegance and discipline of the form.
A functional reinterpretation of the horse motif appears in Horse Vase, where the animal’s silhouette is transformed into a decorative object. The stylized shape and hand-painted black glossy mane add character and a subtle playfulness, uniting utility with artistic expression while preserving the brand’s distinctive visual language.
The culmination of the series is Spanish Pure Breed (Black) — a High Porcelain creation released in a limited edition of 500 pieces. Inspired by the horses of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, the sculpture is crafted from black matte porcelain and enriched with golden luster, metallic elements, and genuine leather details. This piece embodies the ceremonial beauty, discipline, and strength of the Spanish purebred horse, demonstrating the highest level of technical and artistic mastery achieved by Lladró.
Continuing the development of its zodiac series, Lladró offers collectors and admirers of decorative art new interpretations of ancient symbolism. The Horse becomes not only an aesthetic object but also a personal talisman for those born under this sign (1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026), reflecting their character through form, color, and material.
All Lladró creations are handcrafted from the initial sketch to the final decoration at the brand’s workshops in Valencia, Spain.
