For the first time in Baku!
On 16 and 17 March, the Azerbaijan State Academic Musical Theatre will host the premiere of the ballet performance "Lazgi. Dance of soul and love.”
This spectacular production by the renowned German choreographer and choreographer Raul Raimondo Rebeck is dedicated to the ancient folk dance of Lazgi, which has been inscribed by UNESCO on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The history of the Khorazm dance, which epitomises folk wisdom and is shrouded in many mysteries and riddles, dates back three thousand years.
Exciting energy, incendiary movements, a unique style based on a complex dance pattern – all this makes lazgi an outstanding cultural phenomenon.
The performance by the National Ballet of Uzbekistan was first presented to the public in 2021 and immediately became a sensation, winning rave reviews from the audience.
At the heart of the ballet is a story about the love of dance and life itself. The plot begins millennia ago, in the great era of caravans travelling through Central Asia along the Great Silk Road. In the heat of the desert to the songs of shamans, Love awakens and the immortal Soul begins its eternal dance.
A fantastic journey from the past to the future is the story of the Soul, which embodies centuries-old traditions and folk temperament, and Love, which follows it through all eras. The history of the people, the memory of ancestors, the voices of spirits – in each act of the ballet the bond of time grows ever stronger, so that in the finale Soul and Love become an indivisible whole.
Modern choreography by Raimondo Rebecca, an incredible combination of light, music, plastic art, folklore colour, and, of course, the brilliant performance of the Uzbek National Ballet Company – join an unforgettable celebration of art!
The performances are supported by the Foundation for the Development of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan.
