Garrard Celebrates 290 Years of Craftsmanship, Creativity and Royal Heritage

This year, Garrard, the world’s oldest jewellery house, celebrates an extraordinary milestone — 290 years of unrivalled craftsmanship, creativity and royal heritage. As the first jewellery house in history to reach 290 years, Garrard marks the occasion with A Legacy of Permanence, A Story of Brilliance, a curated journey through its archives revealing the innovations and masterpieces that have defined its enduring place in British luxury.

Since 1735, Garrard has upheld its commitment to excellence. From the sapphire and diamond brooch gifted by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria on the eve of their wedding to the sapphire cluster engagement ring worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, and now Catherine, Princess of Wales, Garrard’s jewels have been at the heart of royal love stories and historic moments. Across almost three centuries, the House has remained a custodian of tradition while pushing the boundaries of design and craftsmanship.

Joanne Milner, Chairwoman of Garrard, said: “To stand as not only the world’s oldest jewellery house, but also as a British business approaching 300 years, is a truly remarkable achievement. Garrard’s heritage is woven into the fabric of this country’s history, and it remains a great source of pride for everyone who works here. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past, but also a statement of our commitment to shaping Garrard’s future for generations to come.”

Sara Prentice, Chief Creative Officer, added: “At Garrard, every creation is born from our storied past, crafted for today and destined to be treasured for generations. Our heritage, design and craftsmanship unite time-honoured techniques with a forward-thinking vision, embodying the enduring spirit of Garrard.”

From its founding by George Wickes in 1735 and appointment as the first official Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 to the creation of legendary pieces such as the Fringe Tiara and the Cullinan I setting, Garrard’s history is interwoven with Britain’s most iconic moments. Today, the House continues to unite impeccable craftsmanship with innovation — from transformable designs to the use of billion-year-old meteorite in fine jewellery, redefining what “precious” can mean.

Sustainability and responsibility remain central to Garrard’s philosophy. The House is among the first fine jewellers to receive the Butterfly Mark for its commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental standards, reflecting its duty as a Royal Warrant holder to serve not only today, but for generations to come.
