Jeyla's Story
"Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak."
I chose to begin with this quote as it is one of my favourites that defines fashion.
I am Jeyla, a 21-year-old student pursuing a degree in "Textile and Fashion Design" at Istanbul Bilgi University. Fashion has been a part of my life since childhood, as
I recall designing clothes for my Barbie dolls instead of playing with my friend and reading fashion magazines rather than school books.
The reason we picked this venue for our photoshoot
is because this is one of the places where I feel most comfortable and positive at. Among my hobbies and interests, horse riding holds a special place in my heart.
The horse is my spirit animal, and I feel a unique connection with this creature. Horse embodies the spiritual power
of independence, freedom and confidence, and this is exactly how I would describe myself in three words. For me, horse riding is the best way to escape from reality and negativity. I call the horse a "healing" animal. It senses your negative energy and replaces it with a positive
vibe instead.
When it comes to my style, I remember back in high school, I was trying to figure out my identity. I tried several different styles to see which worked best for me. One of these
styles stuck with me through the years. I would describe
my style as "aesthetically simple." Over the years, I came
to the conclusion that 'less" suits me more. I love to look cool and stylish but effortless in the meantime. During the daytime, I prefer to go more basic, sporty, and clean: jeans (never skinny), a t-shirt or crop top, an oversized blazer or cool jacket, and a pair of Loro Piana or Golden Goose sneakers. Depending on my mood, I also can leave the house in sweatpants and a pair of Air Jordans. At night,
I like to go more extra. I would either pop up the look with the jacket (my favourite piece of the outfit), a brightly coloured pair of shoes or bag, jewellery or red lipstick.
I tend to wear soft or dark colours depending on the season. My go-to colours are white, beige, baby pink
or blue, grey, black, brown, dark green and dark blue. While I'm not a fan of bright colours, I do like to sometimes combine classic pieces with some crazy colourful ones. I am a Gemini, and it affects my style a lot. If one day I go with a more calm outfit, the next day I want to be more colourful and crazy.
Adapting to trends is also very important to me. I don't follow every trend, but I incorporate the ones I like into my personal style. Living in Istanbul has greatly influenced my style for the better. People there are more daring and experimental and living among those who have such self-confidence, naturally gave me the same trait.
Besides fashion, I am passionate about art. I love drawing and creating something I can't speak about outloud. I’ve also had the opportunity to exhibit my own artwork at
a young age. Over the years my taste in art has shifted towards contemporary art and I plan to open my own contemporary art gallery in the future to support and exhibit young talents.
I also own a company named Xari Bulbul Group which consists of several directions: @xaribulbulflowers, @xaribulbulsweets, and @xaribulbulgifts, where you can find scarves and ties with my own designs.
